Mew – Frengers – Snow Brigade

No way. How did I miss these guys?! I’m way late in the game; but I love it.

My coworker Steph just told me about a band that I’m absolutely stoked about: Mew. These guys are from Denmark and rock it. So, there music wasn’t released in the US until much later; but the CD I just purchased (not on iTunes) is officially from 2003 and they have put out one album since–with another one showing up later this month. The name of the disc I bought is Frengers.

The video below is so, so good. I can’t believe how clear and beautiful lead singer Jonas Bjerre’s voice is live.

I love this song because it just keeps driving the beat through the whole track. I love the drumming, it is persistent and during the heavy fills, the music keeps going as normal. A lot of times during fills like the one you’ll hear during the chorus, the entire music changes to match the rhythm of the drummer (kind of a dun-dun-dun mute of the guitar); but in this song the bassist and guitarist just keep going. They all just keep going.

The name of the song is Snow Brigade. They won the 2003 Danish Music Band and Album of the Year awards, and this is them performing live at the award ceremony. Check out what happens at about 2.5 minutes into it. I want so much to be at that show. I’m looking forward to checking out more of their new stuff.

  • @TB:

Glad you like them. Let me know what you think of their newer stuff.

I've been hearing a bunch about this band, but hadn't heard anything by them yet (since I seem to stuck in my own iPod these days). I am now a fan.
  • @Chris C. I love the fans! The snow half way through is amazing. I basically want to be them in that video.

@CML: Thanks for letting me borrow the Glass Handed Kite. I'm looking forward to it.
  • Solid. I love the song "Zookeepers Boy" from the time's I've heard it. Doug, I saw your tweet regarding Beach House, I'll be checking them out. I was streaming all of Mew's newer disc, "And The Glass Handed Kites," and was digging it. Sounds like I should pick that up too.

"apocalypso" and "special" on the same album doug mentions -- and the glass handed kites -- are also tremendously radass.
  • I hadn't heard this one, but it's pretty awesome. I'm a huge fan of their song "Zookeeper's Boy," which has a mind-punchingly catchy chorus.
  • Pretty cool, accept for the cheesy hurricane force fans blowing on them in that YouTube video.
