December’s review goes to Jimmy Eat World’s new disc, “Chase This Light.â€
Check out my favorite track, “Here It Goes.”
It has taken them three years and building their own studio to finally produce another album. This isn’t their best; but it’s still a really solid disc. If you are looking for an infectious sound that will leave you feeling good (even when the songs are dark and depressing) and grow on you, this is your album.
I will say that it lacks some of the creativity and diversity we have seen on other discs like “Clarity†and “Futures.†I am a bit bored by some of the songs. For example, Firefight,–while good–doesn’t really go anywhere. Dizzy, however, closes the album strong with Jimmy’s classic anthem like sound that makes you wish the song was longer.
This is by far their most tightly produced album and I can’t help but wonder if that’s not a small mistake. One of the beauties of Jimmy’s music is it’s layered intricacy. This album is so flawless, the layers aren’t quite as defined as they have been on songs like 23, for example.
Lyrically, it’s still the simple and candid Jim Atkins, and yet–it never comes across as inauthentic or cheesey rhymes.
